Uxua Casa HotelTrancoso, Brazil

Uxua Casa is all about style and this is apparent as soon as you walk through the entrance from the Quadrado, through one of the original brightly coloured fishermans’ houses. Inside, the hotel is a serene haven combining stylish modern design with the use of traditional local materials.

The ‘village within a village’ concept was created by the ex-Diesel designer Wilbert Das and the design is standout throughout. The rooms are located in ten self-contained ‘casas’, the largest of which has three bedrooms and extends to 230 square meters. Four of these casas are beautifully restored fishermens’ houses with their own front doors directly onto the Quadrado, the remainder are individually designed buildings spread around the lush tropical garden. All of the casas have their own dining area, bar and private deck or patio.

The centrepiece of the property is the swimming pool lined with 40,000 quartz pebbles (which was used as a location for the 2009 Pirelli calendar). The restaurant serves excellent Bahian cuisine and is also famed for its ice-cream. There is also a spa and a gym that delivers yoga and capoeira lessons.

The beach is a ten minute walk from the Quadrado, but Uxua has its own beach bar with cushioned sofas and shaded area. The location of Trancoso; between 4 rivers, Atlantic rainforest, mangroves and the sea, mean that this is an excellent location for exploration on foot, bike or horse. Cultural visits and hikes can also be arranged in the neighbouring Pataxó
Indian reservation.

This is a very unique and special place to stay, with the added bonus of the opportunity to stay in a historic Quadrado house. The organic design throughout is stunning.
